Organization

Each principality possessed its own army, led by its respective prince. The druzhina, the prince’s corps of retainers, was the most effective unit of the army. Professional warriors, the druzhina fought as heavy cavalry but could also serve as infantry. The bulk of the army consisted of the city’s militia and smerdy or peasants, supplemented by mercenaries. Nomads, typically Kipchak Turks who often formed alliances with the princes, served as auxiliaries and ranked close to the druzhina in terms of effectiveness.
